In this cartoon, the two characters discuss the function of image. The girl points out that image and text promote each other mutually, and a image can be either directed related to the story or abstract. She also suggests that various kinds of image can be used in DST such as photograph, cartoon and images from movies. In order to avoid violating intellectual property, the girl mentions that every downloaded images need to be cited, by creating a list of URL in the end of the story.
I downloaded the upper picture from the internet in order to indicate international friend. In this picture, four people holding hands and dancing; they wore drastically different costume and accessories. As I typed "international friendship" in Google, this picture was among the results, it was a descriptive image because, as far as I concerned, holding hand and dancing is the best way to show your friendship with other people. Symbolic as it is, I will use it in my DST to illustrate how my host family treat me as a family member, and it is through "International Friendships" coordination that I was able to set down during the very first week staying in USA.

Blog #5 Using pictures in your digital story
In this blog, please watch and summarize the video(plagiarismstories.tumblr.com) about using images in the digital story. In a paragraph summarize the video. Then, choose 1 picture from your story. Summarize what is happening in the picture (don't use your script) Say what the picture is showing and why you would use it. Is it more symbolic or explicit (obvious content)? Is this your picture or did you download it? How would you use it in your video?

Blog#4 DST Script : Mssion trip to Vanuatu
Have you heard of the country, Vanuatu? I think this country is quite unknown to most people. I also was curious about this country; therefore I decided to participate in a mission trip to Vanuatu for 7 days.
Vanuatu is an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is located east of Australia and west of Fiji. The languages spoken there are Bislama, English, and French. The capital is Port Vila, which is where I flew to. The climate is sub-tropical. I went there in summer in Korea, so the weather in Vanuatu was winter. It was around 82F, with both rainy and dry days. I liked the weather when I went there because it was my favorite weather, not too hot and not too cold. The nature was so beautiful and I could see so many palm trees. The nature was conserved very well. I recommend you visit there.
I prepared a variety things for them and for traveling. In our church, I had 40 days of early morning prayer. I came to church around 2am and made sandwiches. It is like a fundraising activity. It was worthwhile to make sandwiches with others before service starts so I could forget my sleep. While spending a lot of time at church, I could learn Taekwon-do, dance, worship songs, and other group activities. The most challenging thing was that through having so much time to pray for others and for myself my faith could be spiritually matured.
When we started our mission in Vanuatu, we had to travel a lot by using many forms of transportation to reach villages. We climbed over mountains and went through the jungle for 8 hours back and forth. It was the most adventurous trip in my life. We also took a ship to travel to other islands, and also just took buses or walked on foot. When I met village people I could feel the pureness of their mind. I think it is because they are living within nature. After our mission services, they also sang their worship songs in their own language. The rhythm was one I'd never heard before and it was beautiful to see them. We also played with kids and I read the Bible story of Noah's ark and demonstrated Taekwon-do. I was so glad and thankful to God because everything we had prepared went as planned.
During the mission trip I stayed at a missionary's house who was one of member's uncle. We could eat Korean food every time we came back to that house. I was so thankful because I was not used to Vanuatu's healthy native food. Also I could have a nice rest. Finally, we went to a Christian high school. One day I met and had a talk with a student on the way back to the house. He was really eager to learn and he also wanted to be a missionary in another province. I thought that the chance to go to school is important for them to learn something until they can teach each other.
I felt that they had very peaceful lives, and not as many worries in their mind as I do. They seemed to be just happy with their life.
When the mission trip was finished, I dreamed of visiting again someday. Once I'm ready, I hope I can go.

Bolg#4 DST final "Fight against Gestational Diabetes"
In 2011, I received the most precious gift in my life. Yes! I was pregnant and had my first baby in the fourth year after I married.
When I told my husband this good news last April, he was extremely happy and immediately shared it with our parents. Of course, the whole family became excited and very nervous about my daily life. My mom suggested that I have food with adequate nutrition instead of fast food and avoid alcohol. My mother-in law asked me to go to bed early and get plenty of rest. They were a little verbose, but both my husband and I were glad to accept their suggestions without any complains. From then on, I was avoided from housework and exercise. In addition, I started to have organic food; and my appetite was so good that I usually had two big bowls of rice a meal with a variety of vegetables and fruits. At the end of my sixth-month pregnancy, my weight increased 15 lbs and my baby grew very well in my womb.
Soon, it was time for the glucose challenge test in the 28th week. Unfortunately, my blood glucose level was much higher than standard value, so I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. What a terrible thing!! My family was shocked by this and wondered how to deal with this problem, especially after we understood that there were many bad effects on an infant if mom couldn’t control high blood glucose level, like large size and newborn death. “What should I do for my baby?” Doctors with whom my parents consulted in China said “Inject insulin”; instead, my OB suggested that I change my recipe and living habits. I didn’t want to use any drug so I followed instructions from my OB. At first, my blood sugar needed to be monitored four times a day. Then I strictly followed a low-carbohydrate diet, which meant a very limited amount of white rice and high-glucose fruits like apple. Unsurprisingly, I failed several times in the first week of controlling diet, but I found some tricks to control blood sugar, like eating grapefruit. To further decrease my blood sugar, I began one-hour exercise after each meal. Even in winter, I would run slowly half an hour and climbed stairs half an hour with heavy coat outside my apartment after each meal. During the last three-month pregnancy, I gradually got used to this style of life, which was completely contrary to the Chinese tradition; moreover, I thought this kind of life was much healthier. For example, although my belly became bigger and bigger, I didn’t feel any related discomfort, like back pain, body edema. Another benefit was that my weight stopped increasing and I didn’t need to lose weight after delivery. As a result, I successfully controlled my blood sugar in normal range without insulin; meanwhile my baby was in normal size and his organs developed very well.
Because I was a high-risk pregnant woman and an unexpected bleeding occurred one week before my due date, my OB decided to induce me in advance. After 20 hours striving, my cute baby, weighting 6 pounds 8 ounces, announced his coming to the world. My husband and I were extremely happy for his health. In the ward, my husband firmly held him with a smile. Looking at the two most important men in my life, everything I did before was worth it.

Blog 4 - Digital Story Script
Seven days with my host family 3rd draft
March.19th
was a milestone of my life. On this day I left China for USA, and started to
pursue my bachelor’s degree in OSU.
As the temporary
housing in OSU is not available at that moment, a current OSU student informed
me that international students could apply for a temporary housing and airport
pick-up online through an organization called IFI (International Friendship).
They coordinate the students who need help with available host family and
airport pick-up.
After total 15 hours’
flight, I landed at the Columbus airport. At the baggage claim area, Mrs. Wile
gave me a very American style welcome, with a grin and handshaking. Frankly
speaking, Mrs. Wile was the very first person I met in USA. On the way to my
host family, Mrs. Wile and I talked about my family, my hometown, and how great
Columbus was. Finally, I was standing in front of my host family’s house, with
tons of questions in my head, such as, How many people are there? What do they
eat for dinner? How should I behave as a guest?
Chapter One: Self
Adaption.
The first problem is
Jet lag. Although I got a chance to promote to business class, it was hardly a
pleasant journey. All the noises from engine and outside air kept me awake. I
was diagnosed with gastritis and a lack of sleep made it hurt more. In order to
adapt the time difference, I was trying to distract myself from sleeping when I
arrived at Linda’s (By the way, Linda is the hostess of my host family.)
Luckily, Linda is a good talker, and she was taking Chinese classes as her
fourth language. She helped me with my speaking English, such as how to
distinguish the pronunciation “Close” from “Cloth”, “walk” from “work”. I was
able to go through those tough day hours with the help of Linda; we talked
about how Chinese form our writing and reading system. Linda mastered English,
Spanish and French and was on her way to Chinese, so I also helped her with her
Chinese, sometimes we just chatted with our second language, how amazing it
was!
Chapter
Two: Talking to native speakers.
I always tried to
talk to Linda and Matthew to enhance my speaking English. We had a wide range
of topics including Chinese foreign police with USA, how to reform China’s
political system and social welfare, normal USA citizen attitude towards China
and even about the drug phenomenon in USA. Once, Linda told me that she had to
remove the weeds in their yard. I was extremely shocked at that moment because
I misunderstood weed as marijuana. “What! You have weed in your yard?” I
replied. “Is it illegal in USA?” Linda suddenly realized and started to laugh.
Chapter
Three: Campfire and toast Marshmallow
On my
final day with Linda, I had my first backyard campfire experience. After
dinner, Linda’s husband Roy set up a campfire in their backyard and invited
everybody present to joy the little party and it was also provided with
marshmallow. Sitting around campfire, I felt like warmth spread into my heart.
Although it was 7600 miles away from home, being accompanied by friend and “relatives”,
I did not feel lonely at all.
Linda meant a harbor
to me; she treated me as family, introduced and taught me about American life
and culture, help me to adjust and adapt. I remember once I asked Linda, How to
behave as a nice person here in USA? She replied, “You are already a good
person, just be yourself.” Which lighten me so much and show her wisdom and
concern.
Time flied, all the
doubt about USA and OSU would finally be solved. During the procedure of being
familiar with new life, I leaned about everyone should adapt everything as soon
as possible because time should be put into studying and being social, which is
the foundation of university life.

Blog#4 DST;Becoming brand-new 'Eugenia'
For me, travel has been a mentor, teaching many
things in my life. My trip in winter 2011 to Hong Kong and Macao provided me
with valuable life lessons. My personal character is change. Also, from travel,
I find what I want to do in the future. The Hong Kong and Macao trip is the turning
point of my life.
During the trip, asking questions to somebody
makes me become an outgoing person. In the past, I was shy person. I hardly
expressed my opinions. However, in Hong Kong, I started to ask somebody how to
go or where is it. At first, I feel embarrassed to ask what I don’t know. However,
I became more and more outgoing person. I don’t fear about expressing I don’t
know. Moreover, it makes me have more confident in dealing with problems.
Thanks to my changing in attitude, I can travel well in Macao. Actually I don’t
have enough time to plan the trip to Macao in one day trip. I had difficulty in
finding transportation to ‘Venetian Hotel’. I asked one person. He got much
information and was good at Cantonese. I can go safely and easily with him there.
I found that speaking second language is useful.
I realized that English is beneficial to me. When I was on the way to ‘Harbor
city’, I couldn’t find where the place is. I asked to woman in English, and she
told me right direction very kindly. Finally, I could find the place and see
the beautiful night view in Hong Kong. Without English, I might be lost. If I only
can speak Korean, I had a difficulty in traveling. I was motivated to study English
much harder.
I make a plan for a future. I found the
cultural diversity in life in Hong Kong. The mixed culture of western and
eastern in Hong Kong was intrigued me. For instance, they have a tea time with
dim sum. Tea time is from United Kingdom. Dim sum is their traditional food. Two
different aspects of culture are fused in one. By seeing the character of culture
assimilation, I want to study cultures in-depth. As my major was International
Trade in Korea I got an interest in International Marketing which is based on
understanding various cultural concepts. As I want to develop multi-cultural
idea, I decided to study International Business in America. America’s multicultural
is called as a ‘melting pot’. I want to experience what is the melting pot
culture for building up my multi-cultural idea. Now, I am OSU in Columbus,
Ohio. I am very appreciated that I can experience diversity in here. I met
various people with various ethnic identities. I can share the ideas of
cultural similarities and differences with them.
The most memorable
place that I have visited is Hong Kong. I learned how to overcome my shyness in
the trip. I became an outgoing person and I realized the importance of English.
Moreover, I set my dream firmly in there. Everything that I saw and experienced
during the trip is worthy to me. This summer I am planning to go to New York. I
expect that I will be able to learn precious lesson for life from the next
trip.

Every student except me in this class is an
undergraduate student. As a unique graduate student, I’d like to share my
precious experience happened during my undergraduate and master years. I am
majoring in mathematics, pursuing Ph.D at Ohio State University now. I wasn’t
the person who originally wanted to be a mathematician. In fact, until I was in
2nd year in college I’d never thought about pursuing professional
study.
In my second year in college, I met a
professor. I had taken his class related to his research area called analysis
for 2 years, 4 classes from beginning of my first year to the end of the second
year. He had always been nice to me personally and academically. He found out
my potential intelligence so eventually he decided to support me financially for
my rest of college years. He bought me lots of textbooks, made me participate
in several projects. Especially whenever I got depressed, he could feel my
depression and cheered me up by sharing his frustrating moment. I was so
touched. Thanks to him, I could fall in love with my major, math. I wanted to
be a person like him, who helps and has a good effect on students. At the final
semester I made myself decide to study abroad in order to be a professional
mathematician like him.
In order to study math abroad, first and
the most important thing was going graduate school and getting a masters degree
in my country because we needed good recommendation paper. So I naturally thought
of him as my master advisor and he accepted me as his student. I was so happy.
It was the beginning of my last undergraduate semester.
However, four days before the first day of
graduate school, he told me that he can’t accept me as his student. He didn’t
even tell me the reason. It turned out that there is another person who wanted
to be his student and he wanted to accept her because her GPA is better than
mine. I was frustrated. Anyway I couldn’t waste time spending on frustration. I
had to find another person. There was only one available professor, who was
female whose major was abstract algebra, which was my weakest study field. I
felt devastated. I had gotten poor grades on any abstract algebra related
courses so I had never wanted to study in this area. But I had no choice. I had
to choose her and I had to be chosen by her. Decided to major in algebra for my
master degree, I started thinking. How could I study in this area, take these
courses. Furthermore, how could I write the thesis paper. I didn’t know what to
do.
Surprisingly, I was able to be good at this
area as one semester passes and another. Here is the reason. Since I wasn’t
sure about my ability to study this area, I had to struggle with it, spend more
time on studying. I tried to be good at all courses and I was. I was always the
top of the courses during my master years. I was surprised by myself. I didn’t
even know that I have ability to be good at this area. This frustration moment
found out my potential. It was amazing.
On the other hand, my new advisor had a nice
personality as well and I built a great relationship with her just like I did
with him. Also she felt sympathy with my pain, what I had been through. She was
always willing to help me, cheer me up and motivate me. She knew my situation
even my background. As time passes, she has been impressed by my endeavor and
ability to be good at any fields. Finally, I ended up publishing my thesis
based on abstract algebra. Moreover, because of my endeavor, I could get great recommendation
paper from my thesis committee members and my advisor. One of the committee
members had good relationship with many American colleges. So I could easily be
admitted by several American colleges.
Now I can say myself as an expert on any
fields on mathematics. I am so proud of myself. From this experience, I have
earned not only background of algebra and an admission but also a precious
lesson saying that “in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” by Albert
Einstein.
DTS Different World
Different World
In summer 2010, my parents and I traveled to a place which is located in Gansu province, but very close to Sichuan and Tibet. People who have been to that place told us we can find peace in Langmu. That place is so quiet; just a few people come from outside to visit it. Local people lack communication with outside world. Some people are nice, but some people are so different from us. We can not take photos and laugh in front of them, maybe they think we disrespect them. In this place, we should be careful of our behaviors in some situation.
There is a famous temple that named LangMu. This temple is like our university, people who believe in Tibetan Buddhism would go to this temple for studying. People also learn English in the temple, for some people, they are better as English compared with Mandarin. In this area, we were impressed by the strong power of Tibetan Buddrism on people. The religion affects all the aspects of their life. They follow the rules, dress what rules told, all the life-style due to religion rules. Moreover, people would take long time to go to Tibet by foot.
In order to experience Tibetan life, we went to another place which is far away from town. It was a long time by riding horse, but the river was so clean, red flowers scattered on the grass; we did not know the name of flowers; they told me all the flower in these places is called “GeiShang”, all things were fresh. We did not see any other people along the road. When we arrived at destiantion, we felt totally free. In this large place, there was only one family. They did not have house, their home just a tenant. They did not have bathroom, kitchen, bedroom. They cook, eat, sleep in one place. If they need a shower, they just jump into the river in summer time. There is no tv, no computer, they did not know what is going on out of their tenant. A woman who is a member of the family; she so surprised when she saw what we wear.Foreign people given her some clips as gift. Their life condition is so terrible. Their children just sleep in the basket, no nurtions meal, no tool, just a basket.
They did not have any way to entertainment. The one thing to support them is belief. They read the book every day. They believe all the contents of the book. They are poor but they would saving money donate to temple. They live in the original life that they wake up when the sun rise up , they sleep when the sun goes down.
I heared from person who traveled or lived in Tibet, they told me there are many place like this place in Tibet. They are away from modern technology, new thought and they are extremely poor in material level. But they inherit culture from ancestor and the culture do not affect by ethnic Han’s culture, environment is not polluted. I really think that these people need help, they need know what is going on in the world and children need education. But if this place become open, along with increasing number of people coming to visiting. It would cause bad influence on local enviroment, people will change. I am confused is it better for them to know the new things and improve their economics. We can not guarantee that travel industry will not bring bad influence on evironment and we can not sure that increasing number of visitors will not break the peace in this place. This is fact. Along the road to Langmu, we stopped by swap which red army passed by during long match. Because of polluted, swap becoming smaller now. Which can we choose environment or economic?

My
previous school
Lei Chen

4/26/2012
I am a transfer from Merrimack College-a
small college in North Andover, Massachusetts. When I first came to OSU, I was
so surprised by the huge campus, almost 10 times larger than my previous
school! The faculty in charge of the orientation told us OSU has 12 libraries;
almost each major has its own library; that’s awesome! You know, in my previous
school, there is only one small library; therefore, it is hard to find an empty
table sometimes. Moreover, OSU has campus buses giving students convenience to studying
in different buildings, but in my previous school, you don’t need to worry
about being late between two different classes, because it only costs 2 minutes
by foot from one building to another.
However, when I began to take class, I found
the small college had its own advantages, for instance, the size of class was
small, there were only 20 students in one class, so the professor could easily
to take care of every student, furthermore each student had enough time to show
their opinions; we have more chance to do presentation in the class and more
group works. Therefore, the atmosphere of class was good; every student focused
on the class. By contrast, the size of class
in OSU is much bigger, I take the biology 110 this quarter, and there are
nearly 600 students in the classroom! The professor stood on the front stage
and talked through the whole class. Some students don’t focus on the class, but
rather than talk with their friends or check their Facebook. Fortunately, the
English 106 has a small size; it helps us cover the language barrier more smoothly.
Besides studying, living
in OSU and Merrimack College is also different. In Merrimack, 90% of the
students live on the campus. Because students all live together, we have more
time to get in touch with each other, and help each other. The RA will take
care of all students, and hold various activities, for example, the match of
table tennis, BBQ party, Pizza Night; these activities make our life more
colorful, on
the other hand, in
OSU, most of students live off campus. Most students will rent an apartment and
take the bus or drive to school. Anyway, living off campus is much cheaper and
more convenient. Now I live in University Village, it is near the campus and providing
shuttles to school. My roommate here is very nice; he also comes from China,
sometimes, he will cook Chinese food for our dinner, that’s my favorite time.
My first friend in American is Petar Golijanin;
he was my roommate in my previous school. Petar is not an American even his English
is every good now. He comes from Serbia, and he has studied in
Merrimack College almost 3 years, his major is Biochemistry, he told me his goal was
getting a PhD degree. At the beginning, I felt afraid to talk to
him because my English was limited, but he told me that in his first year in
America, his English was even worse than me, doing more practice was the only
way to improve my English. Thus he suggested we could have a daily-talk before
bedtime, actually, my English was improved quickly during that time. Before the exams,
we would study in the library until 1 am, we encouraged each other when we felt
tired and wanted to give up, sometimes I could help him do some math problem
and he helped me check the grammar in my paper. Finally we both got satisfied
grades in our final exams.
Although I only studied in Merrimack for 4 months,
it really gives me a wonderful memory—the building in school, the helpful
professor, my roommate. Now I transferred to OSU—a totally different school
from Merrimack College, I believe the life here will be a new adventure.
blog 4 : My Grandfather's Story
It was a sunny day in Rabat, Morocco when my
grandfather's story began. In 1941, when he was twenty years old, the French
Army sent him a thick letter telling him that he must join the battle against
the German army.
At first, his friends were more uncomfortable than
my grandfather about fighting on the side of the French colonizers and risking
their lives. He discussed the advantage of fighting for the French. In my
grandfather’s opinion, everything in life has an affordable price.
First of all, according to my grandfather, the
French colonizers were better than the alternative of the Vichy regime. Also,
the Moroccan King Mohammed V had a good relationship with the United States
government. Therefore there was a chance that the two countries could start negotiations
on our quest for independence after the war.
My grandfather’s friends responded, however, that
this would be the best time to fight the French because they are powerless and
desperate. My grandfather mentioned that there was a big chance that the Axis
Powers would lose like in World War I. In addition, we would get experience
from our participation in the war which we could use against the French later
if necessary.
After three months of firearms training in
Casablanca. My grandfather and five of his best friends had to leave for
France, not like I did when I was 21 years old and went to Paris institute of
technology, but to fight in the war. Most of the soldiers were strangers and
the only thing in common was their uniforms. My grandfather showed a great
skill in the battles, and that’s why his Commander starts positioning him and
his friends in the front of the lines. He was fighting the Germans and killing
them one after the other as if it was his own country in danger. While
they were fighting along the border of Belgium, three of his friends were
killed and my grandfather was taken prisoner. During this time he experienced all kinds
of torture and he just had to get used to pain. After two months, and while the
French were bombing the village of Eisden, he escaped from prison there and
walked for days to Lille and then, after 1 month he got Paris desperate and
sick. After the war finished, he started fighting the French colonizers with
his friends for almost nine years; they were hungry, tired, sick, and scared
about their families.
Finally,
Morocco gained independence on March 2, 1956. A few years after that, my
grandfather had the great opportunity to meet the king and receive an honor for
his bravery during the both wartime, but he wasn’t that happy because he lost his
best friends during the war and missed his parents’ funeral.
My
grandfather stayed with us for five years when I was 18 years old. During this
time, I learned many things from him, like how to be thankful for what you
have, be patient for what you don’t have, and that anything could be taken away
from you. He was my best friend and I had the best time speaking to him and
hearing him talking about the hard moments during his life.
In 2009, when I went to France for school, the first day
I got there, I felt like my life took another way, and I start thinking about
how my grandfather’s life changed in this place. It was such a weird coincidence
that he came to this country at the same age as me. While I was in Paris I
heard the worst news of my entire life, and I could not believe that he died.
Always, when I open my grandfather’s photo album and see
the remarkable photos of him and his friends in World War II, vivid memories
come to my mind, and I wonder how young men could make the decision to leave
their families for an unknown destiny, and I start pondering about how easy my
life is now compared to his time.

Blog 3 : Plagiarism Tutorial, questions 4 and 6
The OSU ESL
programs online plagiarism tutorial presents some interesting questions. Like
question N.4 which is about citing ideas from discussion group of students .The
appropriate response explains that is not a clear plagiarism because those
ideas are not considered as intellectual property unless they are written down
or published, and one of the class activities is to discuss and share ideas
between students. It mention that if you’re not sure, you can cite it as a
personal communication. I think that the purpose of working in a group is to
help each other by asking questions, giving opinions, discussing, and proposing
ideas.
The question N.6 shows a case when the professor uses your own work in his syllabus or course. The response states that everything you write down is yours, and no one has the right to use it without citing your reference. Even though your professor, has to ask for your permission before adding it to his course. Lot of times I wondered, could my teacher uses my writing? Or citing my work without my consent? Does my Professor follow the same rules of citing sources? After reading the question’s answer, I believe that my own work will be safe and my professor can’t use it without citing my reference.
Now, after reading those teen questions with appropriate response my definition of plagiarism is clearer than before. I think the definition of plagiarism in my home school is different than OSU, in some cases, like question N.1 for example. My previous university they do not have something called plagiarizing from yourself, whatever you write you can use it whenever you want. And the logic behind this is to give you a chance to reuse your proper work and developing it. I think we could choose to do plagiarism, though once we start doing it, we will lose the spirit of creation, and imagination. In the future this will affect us for succeeding to our best ability in our career. The penalty of doing it, could lead to absence of attending school in the future. The question I still have about plagiarism is, how many different level of plagiarism, and what is the punishment for each level for students who do?

The author, in question 2, describe the citation of textbook for common knowledge.
He also demonstrate the three possible solutions we may choose when dealing with
this kind of problems. I would choose the first solution in order to avoid plagiarism
since the author points out that it is the safest solution.
I think it is significant since I am a university student and I may choose some subject
that I have never learned before. It is useful for me to know what to do to avoid
plagiarism when writing paper of the new field. I will not risk my paper of plagiarism
and use the ideas even they seem like common knowledge. I also think C solution is a
good idea because it can make my paper supportive. What confuses me about this question
is the definition of common knowledge. In my opinion, some knowledge may be viewed as
common for the experts of this field. However, they can be quite specific for the new
comer.
In question 8, the author analyzes the situation about cutting and pasting in the
Internet. Obviously there are two choices--Yes or No.
I think it is a kind of plagiarism even the source comes from the Internet.
This situation is commonly seen for us since we surf the Internet everyday and the
sprit of Internet is sharing. I believe that putting the reference is not that wasting
time. What's more. We should be carful to avoid plagiarism at any time. We will search
a lot in the Internet because it is convenient to find the useful information. But use
every information without reference is risky. Internet is a kind of sword of Damocles
and caution is necessary when taking advantage of the sword. I think developing academic
integrity is always important because it relates to the morality and a clean resume without
plagiarism would be helpful in the career development. So just keep away from plagiarism.

Blog #3, Plagiarism tutorial
Question 3, in the OSU ESL programs online
plagiarism tutorial, presents an issue of a secondary citation. This problem does
not consider it as plagiarism as long as we cite the source, especially in the
case of rare source. I found it interesting because this problem tells and
warns us exact situation and the risk ignoring citation which I have been going
or doing through.
While I was writing my master’s thesis, I had
to read lots of papers, and I end up distinguishing my argument from original
idea and I had to make my argument specialized. I had found many nice but old
references and tried to track all the sources so that I can understand my work
fully. There was one interesting paper which I don’t remember exactly, but it
includes an idea from one of the 1700s papers. I tried to find it, asked my
school and American school to search it, but I couldn’t do it. Thus I had to
give up looking at that paper and try more modern paper. This happening really
bothered me since the author of the paper what I was reading didn’t give
specific source but just mentioned. It remains me so long and I still don’t
know what should I do in such a case? What if I had to read or want papers
which are hard to find? How can I trust the author or the idea? Should I just
believe it because it has been inherited? This issue stimulates me to study the
subject in more depth.

Question 6, in the OSU ESL programs online
plagiarism tutorial, discusses a situation where you doubt whether one of your professors
has taken your work. It proposes that you may accuse your professor of
plagiarism because what you have been writing belongs to you. One of the
significant features of this situation is that it might happen to me.
As a graduate student, I have many chances
working with professors. It is true that the professor should be the smartest
person in the group or class and the generator of idea but he or she cannot be
the one always. Some smart students might come up with incredible idea. In my
field, this situation happens frequently. If we, the graduate students, can’t
be the informant, how can we become a professional or a doctor? As one of the
professional students, I strongly agree and feel happy with the fact that we
are allow to argue for the right in academic fields as the weak.

When I was doing the OSU online plagiarism tutorial, I carefully thought about two of the questions, No.5 and No.8. Question 5 presents the importance of accurate citation. The response stresses that the original source is essential to cite exactly, which conflicts with my previous opinion that it is enough to cite information only from abstract or other related articles, because I couldn’t get the free full text from online database. Now I understand it is also very significant to cite precisely in academic writing. Question 8 defines plagiarizing internet sources in academics. According to the response, directly coping information from internet without paraphrasing and citing is considered as plagiarism. When I learned knowledge about plagiarism from this ESL 506, I began to care about how to correctly using information from internet. For example, I cited the originality of two pictures I used for my second blog.
This OSU online plagiarism tutorial analyzes ten lively examples about plagiarism in academics. After going through the tutorial, I clearly understand which behaviors are defined to plagiarism, so I can avoid plagiarism in the future. As a graduate student, I think many situations are very meaningful for me, like No.3, No.5 and No.8, which are related to academic writing and citing. It is a routine work for me to read research papers and write papers based on my research. To master useful skills to avoid plagiarism is very significant for my future career in academics. Moreover, I still need to improve my writing ability about paraphrasing.

Question #3 explains that ‘secondary citation’
which cites the article citing original article’s contents is plagiarism. The
answer reports that finding original text and citing it is the best way to deal
with secondary citation. I have similar experience as the question situation.
When I was writing paper for International marketing, I wanted to use some
sentences from a journal about cosmetic industry. The sentences came from other
journal. However, I didn’t know how to deal with ‘secondary citation’
appropriate ways. I cited the secondary cited journal’s text. At that time, I didn’t
know the proper secondary citation method. If I knew the appropriate action for
this situation, I might find the original text.
Question#9 points out that copying is not acceptable without citing. The
second text copies several words and main idea from the first one. The answer
addresses that copying the words and using main concept from others’ without
citation is clearly plagiarism. As I thought that using common knowledge would
not be plagiarism, I choose the answer #b. However, the response claims that when
it comes to copying others’ word and idea without citing sources, it is
plagiarism.
This tutorial provides me with lots of useful
information. I have an awareness of citing properly. I do know the technical
citation rules but, I have lack of knowledge of citation method for certain
conditions. I learn how to avoid complicated situation which I could commit
plagiarism without realizing. I think I can use intellectual properties fairly from
now. Without learning plagiarism and citation in the tutorial, I even don’t
think how important using other works in proper way. Sometimes, I just
downloaded movies on the internet. I think I need not to use others’ precious intellectual
properties by inappropriate way from now on.

A tutorial question #4 is that during the group discussion writing down peer's idea in my paper without citing a quotation would be plagiarism. I would just write down my friend's idea because we are in a group and the idea can be shared. Therefore there is no matter to write down the other's idea without citation during the group discussion. A question # 7 is summarizing a passage of a new research, " New research shows that brain scans of suckling moms are indistinguishable from those of virgin rats on cocaine, supporting the idea that nature rewards mothers for nurturing their pups. The work also sets the stage to better understand the mother-child bond in humans. When given the choices, rats with babies under 8 days will choose suckling their pups over cocaine." My summary would be as following: It is hard to tell the baby rat's brain pattern difference between moms' and virgin rats' on cocaine when they suckles; in addition to that there are more chance to suckle their baby rats than the cocain one. There were three different summaries. The one was most similar to the original word expressions. Another was less similar and the other was most general. My opinion about the shown anwser is most close to the first or second anwser.
I've never think that peer's idea in a group discussion can be related to plagiarism in # 4 question. Whenever getting ideas from a member of a group I just didn't cite a quotation or just wrote one's name before the idea because at least I can show my respect to other's idea. However, I've never learnt or heard about exact way to cite one's spoken idea in a group because it can be a result of the mixed opinion and normally each member's name is not cited whenever a member presents group's idea. Just as the tutorial's answer now I realized that I should check and be cautious before write them down that whether the idea was already written in a paper or on the blackboard. Also for #7 question I thought summarzing a passage would be just enough if it's shorter than the original one and it includes all information on it. However, the most correct anwser was the most general one, which contains just the main idea or points of the author. In that way I can escape plagiarism even it doesn't contain specific words or contents. More to that I think question #7 is more important example of plagiarism. If I've not learnt summarizing skills, then I could be in a trouble of plagiarism; because as an undergraduate student I read a lot of researches. Therefore the way of summarizing can influence my presentation or any reports. And I would feel bad about summarizing too much close to my original idea in my career. Even if someone trying to refer my research with citation, the original way of expression that I want it to be original can be distorted because it is a result of study. The general main idea would be better to escape plagiarism whenever I refer or someone else does. In the end, I still feel uncomfortable about citing in a group discussion. I recognize it is unique, but what is the clear rule not to be plagiarism in a group discussion.

The third question in intro tutorial about if we could not find orginal article of reference, we can use article with citing fact in some situations. However, it is not safe to paraphase words in reference. Atually, I did not think it was fault if I cite sources and paraphase the words in reference. Now I realize that we should not change words in reference optional if we use it. even though we cite it, it also cause problem that do not present accurate sources. we should treat every sources seriously. The eight question in intro tutorial about it is not plagiarism if you posted article which you found it in internet on line. We can post others’ article in open environment, but the aritcle is not belong to us. If we used it in our assignment, we also need to cite it.
Through this intro tutorial, I am impressed on lots of questions. As an undergraduate students, I already meet same topic in my assisgnments. Sometimes, I just modified paper and handed in. I did not realize it would be self-plagiarism. Now, I know I can not plagiarize my work. As well as I always read lots of paper which is translated into other language. I do not have mind to find the orginal article, through the third question, I know I do better to find orignal article and cite it. Moreover, when we need find ideas to support our point, although we paraphase words without citing sources, it would be plagiarism. Even though we paraphase words, ideas still belong to others. We can not steal ideas from other people. Hence, we need to use other people source in apporiate way. I think ddeveloping academic integrity is important for our career. Firstly, it teahes us to be honesty. Writing is not end when we graduate from university. We also need write our paper to illustrate our ideas to other people in the work. We also heard some people steal ideas from their co-workers. Hence, the academic intergrity will help us to avoid plagiarism in our career.

blog #3 Plagiarism Tutorial
The N0.3 question describes what we should do
when we can't find the original reference. The responses
demonstrate that if we only cite the secondary article but ignore
the original article, there may be an ethical issue instead of plagiarism.
It seems that we can cite the secondary reference unless the article is really
hard to find or written in another language. However, I think this situation
can be avoided When the Internet is used for information collecting
widely, if you know the title of the article or just some key words, we can
search it on the Internet, and just few seconds, thousandths of
results will present in front of you, then you can find
the original article and cite it.
The NO.6 question discusses the
situation which your professor uses your ideas or articles without your
permission. The answers report that every word you write belongs to you, you
have the copyright of your own articles, and even it is your homework. So if
your professor takes something you write, it is a clear-cut of plagiarism.
Generally, students never relate plagiarism to their professors, because
professors are more knowledgeable and more professional than us, if he or she
uses our articles, we never think it is plagiarism instead we will feel our
work is recognized. Now, I realize this action is violating the college
rules and professor also needs to respect our work.
Through the 10 questions, I have a new
view of plagiarism; especially noteworthy is the plagiarism of self-plagiarism.
In my opinion, the article is written by me; I don't copy other people’s
article or steal other’s idea, so I can rewrite it in order to fit different
subjects, for instance, I simply rewrite an essay which I wrote in my high
school to fit my college history assignment. Now, I know it also can result the
self-plagiarism, I will never do it again. Moreover, developing academic integrity
is very important in my future career. My major is business, so I need to deal
the relationship with the producers, the retails, and customers. Everyone wants
to do business with an honest person; academic integrity can reflect my moral
qualities, it helps me to win the trust of others.
