blog#3 Plagiarism tutorial

When I was doing the OSU online plagiarism tutorial, I carefully thought about two of the questions, No.5 and No.8. Question 5 presents the importance of accurate citation. The response stresses that the original source is essential to cite exactly, which conflicts with my previous opinion that it is enough to cite information only from abstract or other related articles, because I couldn’t get the free full text from online database. Now I understand it is also very significant to cite precisely in academic writing. Question 8 defines plagiarizing internet sources in academics.  According to the response, directly coping information from internet without paraphrasing and citing is considered as plagiarism. When I learned knowledge about plagiarism from this ESL 506, I began to care about how to correctly using information from internet. For example, I cited the originality of two pictures I used for my second blog.

This OSU online plagiarism tutorial analyzes ten lively examples about plagiarism in academics. After going through the tutorial, I clearly understand which behaviors are defined to plagiarism, so I can avoid plagiarism in the future. As a graduate student, I think many situations are very meaningful for me, like No.3, No.5 and No.8, which are related to academic writing and citing. It is a routine work for me to read research papers and write papers based on my research. To master useful skills to avoid plagiarism is very significant for my future career in academics. Moreover, I still need to improve my writing ability about paraphrasing.
