Blog 8: Digital Story Summary and Critique

The digital story “Outside the Glass” made by Golden Jackson, which retired from digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community, explores on the experiences she has gotten from service mission to Honduras. Golden in the beginning explains that she used to encourage her students to visit another places. However, that was one of the reasons which made her accepted the invitation for teaching a course and then been a part in this trip. She notices that while they went to visit Montana de Luz, they developed a course about cultures awareness, poverty, and the rise of Aids in this small town. She points out that working with students and children, add many experiences to her record and showed her how warm and friendly culture in Honduras. Golden agrees that students from this service learned to build a strong self-confidence, and developed their understanding of Honduras economy, culture, and living conditions on collaborating with community. In the end of the story she recommends that an experience like this should not be missed, because it was a different experience than what she used to have in Ohio.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this story. It got me thinking about having a trip to Honduras. I think the story made a point that people should not be stayed “behind the glass” and they should start thinking about having a trip to other places where other people need their help. The story’s title is great. And I like the order which takes the readers from a simple trip in the beginning to a developed mission full of learning and helping. The switch from Golden experiences to her students was amazing.  I was really surprised when she said that she learned many things from Honduras’s children. Golden’s voice was heard and understood. Words are spoken clearly, and her accent was catchy. The pictures she did pick are matching with the story script and her voice. Most of the pictures were symbolism and real. The rhythm and the voice punctuation fit in the story, which made me got into it. The story is told with a good right amount of information and explanation. As a viewer I think the end of this story was like a beginning to another story.

blog#8

Golden Jackson, in her digital story “Outside the Glass”, describes her unforgettable experience of teaching a course to prepare students for services in Honduras. At the beginning, the author mentions that teaching abroad is a great challenge for her because she had to move out from her comfortable lifebut in order to experience a different life and expand world view, she decided to take this task. However, during the teaching, she realized that not only the students received knowledge from teachers, the teachers also learned a lot from the community and students, for example, the hospitality, the abilities and the valuable community asserts. What’s more, she states that the service learning program is a good platform to introduce different cultures, life styles and social organizations. At the end, she encouraged people to go out and experience different life.
Personally, I think the video is pretty good. Firstly, it has a clear topic about the experience of teaching in Honduras. Through the video, we can easily feel the changes of author, whether in her world view or her spirit. The life in Honduras not only influenced her a lot, but also gave us a new view of world-the world outside the glass. Moreover, it is an interesting story; it shows an unfamiliar world to us. The good environment and hardworking people leave me a deep impression, especially the loud cock crow. The quality of voice is good; the sound is clear but she spoke a little fast for international students, sometimes I could not understand what she talked about. The images of the story are good, but not outstanding. Some pictures could not express author’s real emotion and some pictures were not related to the topic closely. After the program, author has a new understanding of life, and she tried to deliver her new understanding to us through her digital story, and she did.

Blog#8 Digital Story Summary and Critique

The story, "Outside of Glass" written by Golden Jackson and published in http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community/, describe the author's experience about teaching in Honduras. At the beginning she explains why she accept the invitation of her friend and formal students. She  and her friends developed the courses for HIV children and provide content and support for students to develop the project. She also emphasize that the interaction with community reinforce the source of knowledge and she also learn a lot from students. In addition, she explains that service learning is very important and the experience is totally different and should not be missed.
The purpose of this story is sharing the experience of the author about being a teacher of preparing the students in service in Honduras as well as the author's change during the teaching, which is obvious for the audience. The story is interesting because it shows the author's change during the teaching. What expressive is that the author attach the voice of others to show what she learn from her students. However, she add the voice in her story without much explanation, which makes me confused when I watch this part. In addition, the voice is clear and easy to understand but adding some background music would improve the story. The images of the story can match the authors' voice and are mostly taken instead of downloading from the Internet, which makes the story more real. The author try to dig deeper of this experience about how knowledge can interact with the real setting, which is also an attractive part of the story. As a whole the story is good to me the audience and it is interesting.

blog#8 Digital Story Summary and Critique

The digital story, "Outside the Glass", describes visiting orphanages of a rural area in abroad. She could experience by learning services from her friend and also became an adviser to children about cheering them up to experience new world, challenge themselves or move out to comfort zone. She performed many activities for children of HIV-AIDS. Students might be exposure to the program which she offered of collaborating with community. In addition, she learned many things from this program such as hindrance or valuable community's assets from students or the community or hospitality. During her digital story, others who were in her same group describe and might simplify their special experiences. The other experiences that they had other than visiting students were such as breathtaking environments, the smell of the place where they visited, and visiting paper factory and specified their experiences at there. When she went to the paper factory, the worker taught them to feel free about learning by asking questions to her. When she reached to the services treating knowledge, experience in a real world, participating and being effective, and personal or interpersonal development. These experiences help them to escape being behind the glass.
She didn't comment of a reason why she has to visit there. When she listed activities, there were no special attractive stories. The voice was clear and could be well conveyed to audience without background music, but there was a sound effect in the middle of her digital story and it disturbed a voice. That sound effect should be lower than the voice. The contents were fine and it was a nice try to put her group member's voices and their opinions to make her digital story interesting, but it would be better if she mentioned them and introduced them before putting other's opinion. The usage of images and the delivering story was fine.

At firstly, she explains why she went to that place, and challenges she faced. They developed courses for HIV students to learn cultural, communicate and so on. As the same time, she also learned new skills and knowledge from community and children. Such as hospitality, friendless and ablilties. She learned different value from students. In addtion, she also introduces the sevice-learning program which can provide more communication, different experiences in culture, social organization and environment to audiences. And this program can help people their personal or interpersonal development. At the end of video, she suggests that people should go out to experience different things.
For my part, this video is good. This video has clearly topic about experiences on sevice-learning for children in Honduras. All the video is around what she did, felt, and learned through this program. And the video is interesting because I really want to have chance to go to other places and help childrens, I am interested in watching this video personally. Also this story is consecution why she did this program, the process of program, and what she felt, and including specific things like what she did for children, learned from community and children and felt. So it attract me. Her voice is soft and she speak slowly, hence I can hear her words clearly. Photos combine with video well, we can see what really happened during her program. But I think imagines are not enough, I need to wait litte long time for another one.

Blog#8 DST Summary and Critiques

The video, ‘Outside the Glass’, by Golden Jackson mainly explains the experience about service teaching experience in Honduras. She starts her digital story with describing the reason she why decided to go to the orphanage in Honduras for teaching. At first, she didn’t want to go out of familiar place. However, she decided to challenge herself moving outside of her comfort life with the service opportunity. The video examines the major activities that she took part in. Although she participated in the service program as a teacher, she also learned from the students and the community in Honduras. The video points out what she learned hospitality, friendless, abilities and value of community from the student and the community. Moreover, she stresses the integrated learning concept, applying service learning to real world problem resolution. She claims that the integrated learning would impact on personal and social development. She also emphasizes how much valuable her experience ‘behind the glass’.
I think that the digital story well convey the main point of the story to the audience. She mainly talks about her service teaching program experience in Honduras. It shows the purpose of telling the story by emphasizing what she learned during the service. Her story was interesting, as it started with the reason why she participated in the service and finished with her feeling of her unique experience. Especially, she mentioned that she don’t want to go outside of her comfortable zone. For me, the way of expressing her frank emotion is surprising and interesting. Furthermore, she gives some accent for stressing some important word. It helps me to concentrate her main view point and understand her story. However, I think her images are not helpful to understanding digital story. Since some of images are just picture of group and scenery of Honduras, it is not related with main point of her story.
