Blog#7 Plagiarism Issues

   # of words 497

Some international students can conduct plagiarism because of their different education. Each country where is their origin has a different standard or degree about plagiarism. Therefore, in some country educators do not treat plagiarism as serious problem and make a program as a course. For example, few years ago in my country, South Korea, a professor copied their students’ thesis had been accused, and this happening became a big issue. More to that, it is also common cultural action in South Korea that some students take a note of educators’ whole lectures word to word and even more their jokes to catch their points to use for preparing exam. I disagree with their education system because students should know the definition of plagiarism, and if they do not get education of it, unintentional plagiarism can cause a social problem in their future. In addition, the law of plagiarism should be treated as serious problem in other country such as copying internet sources without citation or downloading files illegally from easy accessible internet so that people can recognize plagiarism while they are working on their papers. A statistic in Beat the Cheat by Amy Novotney, as cited by Jeff Dunn, reports that the increased number of students think copying their assignment from the internet is not plagiarism. Dr Henry Hunjo, as cited by Laju Arenyeka in Nigeria: Copy, Paste and Plagiarize, states that the internet resources are not believable and he sees copying other’s work without citation is theft, but most students in Nigeria think the internet sources are the standard after they met the development of the internet.

Some international students committed plagiarism get pressure from many different reasons. International students have a pressure of their responsibility of being success because of their family’s expectation or their higher education fee or because that they are afraid of failing because of their weakness of the second language. As I am the one of the international students, these are the rational reasons I also have. Therefore, some international students attempt to plagiarize other’s work or their own past work to get a higher grade. I believe that international students should strongly follow the law of plagiarism in U.S. because they can go to court from their mistakes and it can be a barrier for their future job or continuing education. Karen, as cited by James Bradshaw and Tamara Baluja in ‘Why Many International Students Get a Failing Grade In Academic Integrity”, states that students plagiarize when they need to because of the following reasons: international students’ family is hoping for their students to get a better job in their home country with degree from abroad by spending a lot of money or wants their students to be sponsor to help their family to move. In addition to that, the interview, 45,000 caught cheating at Britain’s universities by Tabby Kinder, shows that a student was accused of plagiarism about her essay similar to the internet sources by running anti-plagiarism software.
