Blog 6 My Progress as a Writer

Language, being the most indispensable part of daily life, has developed for centuries, and also being formed to a more convenient and descriptive function.

My first language is Chinese and I have studied Chinese for 15 years.Compared with English, Chinese letters are ideographs so people cannot tell the pronunciation if they do not know the letter before. It is difficult to be a freshman in Chinese but once you master enough grammar and vocabularies, reading and writing in Chinese would be much easier than English. If people want to write a decent essay, 3000 daily vocabularies are absolutely not enough. After an individual analysis of my language, I would like to define myself as a rational writer in both English and Chinese. In contrast, my weakness is writing a descriptive paper or composition, like "please talk about contemporary art and giving your own definition"
After 7 weeks' ESL lessons, which concentrated on summarizing skills and grammar/editing ability, I realized that I have been wasting time studying English back in China, because all I have learned was how to be a professional multiple choice machine rather than being acknowledged about writing an academic composition. However, difficulty still exist in distinguishing informative and descriptive words, and extensive reading would the a better solution. Editing always helps people with their carelessness. After finish writing my paper, I would reread the paper thoroughly first, in order to find out the improper grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
Three editing drafts were made before the final script. Because my life was so boring since I was born, there left not many topic for me to write about. As far as I am concerned, the "shining" part of my story was the weed story; since violation, sex and drug become "popular" in contemporary movies and music, which served as psychological attractions to the audience. Frankly speaking, my grammar and vocabulary reached the level of a native 6th grade student, which means there is huge space for me to be advanced as well as putting more efforts in developing my English skills.

  1. Intersting characterization of your challenges in writing. I think your story is unique but relatable for everyone.
