I’m from a little town in Ethiopia, called Addigrat. I was born and raised in this town; my parents were farmer’s and they had never studied in a school. As a result, they didn’t know about the importance of school. When I grew up, they didn’t send me to school early. I was nine years old by the time when I started school. The school was far away from the place where I lived, but I was so excited to attend it. I had to wake half an hour early to go to school. But when I started, it was a little difficult for me, the all the students were younger than me. I tried not to think about the different of the age I focused on my study and I achieved good grades, and I got double transfer to different levels for three years, and finally I reached my age level so I was happy. When I finshed Elementary school, my Dad passed away, and it was difficult for me to live there.
After my father’s death, I had to leave the town and moved out to live with my oldest brother to big city, and that was the first time left my mom. I wasn’t happy that time, and I stared new life, I was a little confused and home sick. I went to high school there and four years later I graduated. I did try to attend college but I couldn’t get money to paid for, so I had to find a job first, and It was difficult to get a job, it wasn’t easy to get with out any experience, After a while. I got job then I lived with my brother for while, and my brother got married, then I decided to move out to live with roommate.
It was difficult for me to live with out my family. Because I haven’t been lived by my self, and I do not know how to cook and clean. Cooking and cleaning staff that suppose to be women’s duty, the men’s duty is to get a job, and bring money to home. As a culture men is not allowed to go to the kitchen. Then when I stared new life with roommate we were suffering a lot because we don’t have any idea about it. So we had two choices either to go to eat restaurant or hire a maid, so we could not afford to eat restaurant we don’t get that much paid. Then my roommate and I decide to hire maid that was the better option we had. That was difficult finally we got better life. One day I went my friend wedding and I met this girl which is my wife now we had good time and love each other so a year later we got engage. And she came to U .S. A . it was big diction, to live a long distance relationship for four years. And she came back to Ethiopia, to visit me and family. And we got married. She stayed there for three months.
Three month later she back to the U.S .A because she had to came back here within 3 month to go back to her job, it was hard to say good bye, after two years I got visa I was so excited to came here to live together, and I came here in 2008. Everything was new to me I met new people, and new friend also I saw different culture. The life style is different than back home in here every body is equal men’s and women, kids both working, cleaning, cooking etc..it took me while to learn culture, now I learn some. After sometimes I stared looking for a job All my friends try to find a job for me but it wasn’t easy to get it.
Nine months later I stared a job as a temporary through the agency after three months I got hired at osu. When the first I started work I was so happy, excited at the same time I was nerves too. But it wasn’t to bad the people were so nice they did everything to help me out. And I’m still work with them that’s how I got a chance to go to school, and my goal is try to improve English language then to study electrical engineering and computer science. I passed that all difficult time here I’m happy about my life.
