Blog #6. My progress as a writer

I have wide spectrum of words in my first language writings. I can use various words, especially, high academic words. Also, I can write complicated sentences without grammar errors. When it comes to writing skills in a second language, I have difficulty in selecting appropriate words and phrases. It is difficult for me to catch the subtle differences among words.

However, the strong point of my writing skill in a second language is shortening the relative clause. Also, I improved the summarizing skills in EDUTL 106 course. I become get used to using reporting verbs. I learned what reporting verb is suitable for certain sentences. I learned important criteria to use reporting verbs: Noun phrase or Clause following specific reporting verbs. I didn’t know specific citation rules. With the citation tutorial and citation rules learned in class, I understand how to cite properly. Writing paraphrasing sentences for the summary assignments help me to improve the paraphrasing skills. I think the best way to improve my grammar and editing is writing many sentences.

The first draft of my digital story has some grammar mistakes. There are some unnecessary words and sentences. Also, the sentences and paragraphs are not related well each other. So, in the second draft, I changed most part of the information in paragraphs to make all paragraphs related well. I think the second draft of my digital story is organized well. I use some specific my experience during my trip. I give some cultural examples when I describe the cultural assimilation in Hong Kong. I think my story tell what I learned from the travel very well. I try to show what I feel in the certain experiences in my travel.
