Blog 8: Digital Story Summary and Critique

The digital story “Outside the Glass” made by Golden Jackson, which retired from digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community, explores on the experiences she has gotten from service mission to Honduras. Golden in the beginning explains that she used to encourage her students to visit another places. However, that was one of the reasons which made her accepted the invitation for teaching a course and then been a part in this trip. She notices that while they went to visit Montana de Luz, they developed a course about cultures awareness, poverty, and the rise of Aids in this small town. She points out that working with students and children, add many experiences to her record and showed her how warm and friendly culture in Honduras. Golden agrees that students from this service learned to build a strong self-confidence, and developed their understanding of Honduras economy, culture, and living conditions on collaborating with community. In the end of the story she recommends that an experience like this should not be missed, because it was a different experience than what she used to have in Ohio.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this story. It got me thinking about having a trip to Honduras. I think the story made a point that people should not be stayed “behind the glass” and they should start thinking about having a trip to other places where other people need their help. The story’s title is great. And I like the order which takes the readers from a simple trip in the beginning to a developed mission full of learning and helping. The switch from Golden experiences to her students was amazing.  I was really surprised when she said that she learned many things from Honduras’s children. Golden’s voice was heard and understood. Words are spoken clearly, and her accent was catchy. The pictures she did pick are matching with the story script and her voice. Most of the pictures were symbolism and real. The rhythm and the voice punctuation fit in the story, which made me got into it. The story is told with a good right amount of information and explanation. As a viewer I think the end of this story was like a beginning to another story.

Blog # 8 Digital story.

Golden Jackson, in her digital story “Outside the Glass”, describes her unforgettable experience of teaching a course to prepare students for services in Honduras. At the beginning, the author mentions that teaching abroad is a great challenge for her because she had to move out from her comfortable lifebut in order to experience a different life and expand world view, she decided to take this task. However, during the teaching, she realized that not only the students received knowledge from teachers, the teachers also learned a lot from the community and students, for example, the hospitality, the abilities and the valuable community asserts. What’s more, she states that the service learning program is a good platform to introduce different cultures, life styles and social organizations. At the end, she encouraged people to go out and experience different life.
Personally, I think the video is pretty good. Firstly, it has a clear topic about the experience of teaching in Honduras. Through the video, we can easily feel the changes of author, whether in her world view or her spirit. The life in Honduras not only influenced her a lot, but also gave us a new view of world-the world outside the glass. Moreover, it is an interesting story; it shows an unfamiliar world to us. The good environment and hardworking people leave me a deep impression, especially the loud cock crow. The quality of voice is good; the sound is clear but she spoke a little fast for international students, sometimes I could not understand what she talked about. The images of the story are good, but not outstanding. Some pictures could not express author’s real emotion and some pictures were not related to the topic closely. After the program, author has a new understanding of life, and she tried to deliver her new understanding to us through her digital story, and she did.

Blog#8 Digital Story Summary and Critique

The story, "Outside of Glass" written by Golden Jackson and published in http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community/, describe the author's experience about teaching in Honduras. At the beginning she explains why she accept the invitation of her friend and formal students. She  and her friends developed the courses for HIV children and provide content and support for students to develop the project. She also emphasize that the interaction with community reinforce the source of knowledge and she also learn a lot from students. In addition, she explains that service learning is very important and the experience is totally different and should not be missed.
The purpose of this story is sharing the experience of the author about being a teacher of preparing the students in service in Honduras as well as the author's change during the teaching, which is obvious for the audience. The story is interesting because it shows the author's change during the teaching. What expressive is that the author attach the voice of others to show what she learn from her students. However, she add the voice in her story without much explanation, which makes me confused when I watch this part. In addition, the voice is clear and easy to understand but adding some background music would improve the story. The images of the story can match the authors' voice and are mostly taken instead of downloading from the Internet, which makes the story more real. The author try to dig deeper of this experience about how knowledge can interact with the real setting, which is also an attractive part of the story. As a whole the story is good to me the audience and it is interesting.

blog#8 Digital Story Summary and Critique

The digital story, "Outside the Glass", describes visiting orphanages of a rural area in abroad. She could experience by learning services from her friend and also became an adviser to children about cheering them up to experience new world, challenge themselves or move out to comfort zone. She performed many activities for children of HIV-AIDS. Students might be exposure to the program which she offered of collaborating with community. In addition, she learned many things from this program such as hindrance or valuable community's assets from students or the community or hospitality. During her digital story, others who were in her same group describe and might simplify their special experiences. The other experiences that they had other than visiting students were such as breathtaking environments, the smell of the place where they visited, and visiting paper factory and specified their experiences at there. When she went to the paper factory, the worker taught them to feel free about learning by asking questions to her. When she reached to the services treating knowledge, experience in a real world, participating and being effective, and personal or interpersonal development. These experiences help them to escape being behind the glass.
She didn't comment of a reason why she has to visit there. When she listed activities, there were no special attractive stories. The voice was clear and could be well conveyed to audience without background music, but there was a sound effect in the middle of her digital story and it disturbed a voice. That sound effect should be lower than the voice. The contents were fine and it was a nice try to put her group member's voices and their opinions to make her digital story interesting, but it would be better if she mentioned them and introduced them before putting other's opinion. The usage of images and the delivering story was fine.

DST summary

In the video" Outside of Glass" by Golden Jackson(http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community/), talks experiences about service - learning in Honduras. At firstly, she explains why she went to that place, and challenges she faced. They developed courses for HIV students to learn cultural, communicate and so on. As the same time, she also learned new skills and knowledge from community and children. Such as hospitality, friendless and ablilties. She learned different value from students. In addtion, she also introduces the sevice-learning program which can provide more communication, different experiences in culture, social organization and environment to audiences. And this program can help people their personal or interpersonal development. At the end of video, she suggests that people should go out to experience different things.
For my part, this video is good. This video has clearly topic about experiences on sevice-learning for children in Honduras. All the video is around what she did, felt, and learned through this program. And the video is interesting because I really want to have chance to go to other places and help childrens, I am interested in watching this video personally. Also this story is consecution why she did this program, the process of program, and what she felt, and including specific things like what she did for children, learned from community and children and felt. So it attract me. Her voice is soft and she speak slowly, hence I can hear her words clearly. Photos combine with video well, we can see what really happened during her program. But I think imagines are not enough, I need to wait litte long time for another one.

Blog#8 DST Summary and Critiques

The video, ‘Outside the Glass’, by Golden Jackson mainly explains the experience about service teaching experience in Honduras. She starts her digital story with describing the reason she why decided to go to the orphanage in Honduras for teaching. At first, she didn’t want to go out of familiar place. However, she decided to challenge herself moving outside of her comfort life with the service opportunity. The video examines the major activities that she took part in. Although she participated in the service program as a teacher, she also learned from the students and the community in Honduras. The video points out what she learned hospitality, friendless, abilities and value of community from the student and the community. Moreover, she stresses the integrated learning concept, applying service learning to real world problem resolution. She claims that the integrated learning would impact on personal and social development. She also emphasizes how much valuable her experience ‘behind the glass’.
I think that the digital story well convey the main point of the story to the audience. She mainly talks about her service teaching program experience in Honduras. It shows the purpose of telling the story by emphasizing what she learned during the service. Her story was interesting, as it started with the reason why she participated in the service and finished with her feeling of her unique experience. Especially, she mentioned that she don’t want to go outside of her comfortable zone. For me, the way of expressing her frank emotion is surprising and interesting. Furthermore, she gives some accent for stressing some important word. It helps me to concentrate her main view point and understand her story. However, I think her images are not helpful to understanding digital story. Since some of images are just picture of group and scenery of Honduras, it is not related with main point of her story.

Blog #8 DST summary and critique

The digital story, named “Outside the Glass” done by Golden Jackson in digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community, describes an unusual teaching experience in Honduras. Jackson participated in a course to teach students how to service in Honduras, which she considered as a new adventure. In the course, students were assigned to design their own projects with community. Jackson stated that she learnt a lot not only from community in Honduras, but also from students’ unique experiences, like trash burning smell, beautiful scenes. According to three students’ writing, it was very precious chance for students to combine the concepts of community learnt in the class with practice in international circumstance.

After watching this digital story, I rated it outstanding in several aspects. The purpose and point of view are very clear through the whole story; and they are emphasized both at the beginning and the end. A meaningful dramatic question: what means “outside the glass” is asked and answered in the story. Jackson’s voice lively expresses her ideas and emotions with proper pace. When she describes what means “outside the glass”, she pronounces with stress on “challenge”, “engage” and “expand”. And she uses three voice records from students to tell us their unusual experiences in Honduras, which is very interesting and appealing. In addition, the length of the story is enough to exactly tell the whole story in detail. However, I rated satisfactory on the use of images. Most images are photographs taken in Honduras, from which a true life is presented, but more symbolic images maybe needed to express her feeling. Overall, this is a very engaging digital story.

Blog # 7 plagiarism Issues.

plagiarism has became issue by international students.  as we know they came from different countries with different cultures, and different atmosphere also language, those main things influence international students to do plagiarism.  However international students should learn the acadamic intigrity rules and chalange themselves to get in the system try to provided their own work, otherwise the result it will be value less.  Karan, as cited by james Bradshow and Tamara Baluja, in ''why many international students get a falling grade in acadamic integrity'' adreses that international students do not intend on cheating ...''.it just happens'' it means international students they never plan to do plagrism, however cheating have been issue even by domestic students, according the report of academic integrity officer Danielle,'' Istl shows that one in 82 international students was accused of academic misconduct compare to one in 300 domestic students'' this example states how many students doing plagrism based on the reserch.  The educaters conserns about this problem, try to discuss about how to control this case,  it has been sprading to all higer education.   So to avoid plagiarism the educator should orient  and teach them the academic integrity rule and to show them the right way to do thier on creative.  because the international students when the first time came from home their expactations is high  but things are not the same the way they expect, they have to learn from the begning so the instructors they must work hard togather to bring  them thier goal also to put them in the system.

Blog#8 Digital Story Summary and Critique

The digital story ”Outside the Glass”, produced by Golden Jackson, is based on writer’s true experience in Honduras. Golden Jackson was invited by her friends and former students to teach a course to prepare students for service in Honduras. She accepted the invitation because she intended to move out of the comfort zone to enhance herself. During the service, she realized that the interaction between faculties and communities exert a mutual promotion. Golden suggests that the definition of community in Honduras is much more complex than Ohio, she also states that service help students, as well as herself,  apply academic concept in a real world setting and to be an effective and participatory citizen. In the end, Golden emphasized that it is a unique experience which employed a profound influence.
The title of the digital story is intriguing for its metaphor: Glass blocking people’s view toward outside world.  Author displayed a conspicuous  point of view which encourage students to be a effective and participatory citizen through various social services and continental travelling. She intended to record a medium pace script, obviously, the sound quality is clear enough for me, a first quarter international student, to distinguish and understand. There are interludes in which her students revealed their own opinion about the service to the audience in their own voice and photo, adding to a more neutral and persuasive condition. The images well served the script by precise accompaniment. Within the 3:52 digital story, author has detailed her purpose and the content was fluent and combined as a whole.

Blog#7 Plagiarism Issue

The students who caught for plagiarism have common reasons for plagiarism. Culture is one factor of students committing plagiarism. Family background, Ethnic culture and University culture can be called as ‘culture’. Generally, these cultures help to build up one’s life style, behavior and moral standard. As well as, the cultures would effect on plagiarism of students. For example, the ethnic culture can impact on students’ plagiarism. Greenblatt as cited by Redden claims that Asian students are tend to copy texts and professors’ opinion for showing respect of the professors or sources of the information. The Asian education culture is directly against the Western citing rules. Citation method of western countries emphasizes informing all sources which is used in paper. ‘Lives on boundary’, by Mike Rose shows that family background such as parents’ educating ways can affect to shape students’ personal character. Rose examines Marita’s silent and cautious personal character and how her personal character resulted at her academic misconduct. Moreover, university culture frequently makes students plagiarize paper. The book, ‘My word! Plagiarism & College culture’ by Susan Blum points out that plagiarism in college is not related with morality. Most students think academic result is important not procedure of learning. The emphasizing academic score of college students’ builds up plagiarism, the unique college culture.
The technology innovation allows students to plagiarize more easily. The emergence of Internet provides people with enormous information easily available. As many students are already used to copy and pasted information from the Internet, they commit plagiarism without awareness. The article, ‘Has the internet encouraged plagiarism?’ by Julie Reid, claims that easy assessment for massive information such as blogs and search engine sources in Internet tempt people to plagiarize. With just put some key word in a ‘google’ search engine, people can find suitable information. The Internet gives us convenience in life. However, it always tempts people to copy and paste without citing sources. The article, ‘Plagiarism on the rise’ by Daniel Luzer, give a result of survey related to plagiarism in college. Plagiarized paper has increased over the past 10 years. Moreover, 89 percent say that computer and Internet played a central role in the rise in plagiarism.

Some international students can conduct plagiarism because of their different education. Each country where is their origin has a different standard or degree about plagiarism. Therefore, in some country educators do not treat plagiarism as serious problem and make a program as a course. For example, few years ago in my country, South Korea, a professor copied their students’ thesis had been accused, and this happening became a big issue. More to that, it is also common cultural action in South Korea that some students take a note of educators’ whole lectures word to word and even more their jokes to catch their points to use for preparing exam. I disagree with their education system because students should know the definition of plagiarism, and if they do not get education of it, unintentional plagiarism can cause a social problem in their future. In addition, the law of plagiarism should be treated as serious problem in other country such as copying internet sources without citation or downloading files illegally from easy accessible internet so that people can recognize plagiarism while they are working on their papers. A statistic in Beat the Cheat by Amy Novotney, as cited by Jeff Dunn, reports that the increased number of students think copying their assignment from the internet is not plagiarism. Dr Henry Hunjo, as cited by Laju Arenyeka in Nigeria: Copy, Paste and Plagiarize, states that the internet resources are not believable and he sees copying other’s work without citation is theft, but most students in Nigeria think the internet sources are the standard after they met the development of the internet.

Some international students committed plagiarism get pressure from many different reasons. International students have a pressure of their responsibility of being success because of their family’s expectation or their higher education fee or because that they are afraid of failing because of their weakness of the second language. As I am the one of the international students, these are the rational reasons I also have. Therefore, some international students attempt to plagiarize other’s work or their own past work to get a higher grade. I believe that international students should strongly follow the law of plagiarism in U.S. because they can go to court from their mistakes and it can be a barrier for their future job or continuing education. Karen, as cited by James Bradshaw and Tamara Baluja in ‘Why Many International Students Get a Failing Grade In Academic Integrity”, states that students plagiarize when they need to because of the following reasons: international students’ family is hoping for their students to get a better job in their home country with degree from abroad by spending a lot of money or wants their students to be sponsor to help their family to move. In addition to that, the interview, 45,000 caught cheating at Britain’s universities by Tabby Kinder, shows that a student was accused of plagiarism about her essay similar to the internet sources by running anti-plagiarism software.

BLOG #7 plagiarism issues

                                                              plagiarism issues
Recently, the increasing number of international students involved in plagiarism and the punishment related have been widely discussed in the universities and colleges. It is controversial if the international students be treated in the same way as the domestic students since they come from different countries and have different cultural background, which may be totally differ from those in USA. The punishment of plagiarism includes all kind of penalties of academic misconduct. For example, in “cheating across culture”, the author reports that in Duke University, 9 students of business school were expelled from the university due to plagiarism and what expressive is that all of them come from Asian counties. Brandshaw and Baluja, in “Why Many International students get a falling grade in academic integrity”, report that one in 82 international students was accused of academic misconduct while the proportion of domestic students is one in 300 based on a 2008-2009 report from Academic Integrity Officer Danielle Istl.

There is an increasing concern about whether the punishment for plagiarism is too strict for students especially for international students since they are new to this country and may know little about the academic conduct code. Greenblatt, as cited by Redden  in “Cheating Across Culture”, points out that “many Asian students come from educational system in which the norm is to repeat back a textbook or a professor without citation as a sign of  respect to the source of knowledge.” Some of the people may believe that it shows fairness to treat students no matter where they come from or what language they speak. However, the unique characteristic of plagiarism decides that treating all students in the same way without regarding the difference between students in educational system background and cultural concepts itself is improper and unfair.  Elliott, as cited in ”Cheating Across Culture”, says “(the faculties)They need to understand that they may be learning from ground zero, that sanctions can be delivered and are delivered whether the violation is international or not”. Unfortunately most of the colleges and universities do not have policies concerning this issues and still many international students have to face very strict punishment just because their ignorance.” there is always the possibility that a student might be dismissed from his or her institution, as plagiarism is one of the most serious infractions a student can be accused of”, said Permalink in “Don’t Be Accused Of Copying”. In addition, the punishment may greatly influence the lives of the students who may have pay all his and his family’s effort to study here. The high education system is famous for the high qualities as well as the high costs. Many students’ parents have to spend a great proportion of their income and deposit to send their children abroad. “Then there’s the weight of expectations carried by many students who have crossed the continents and oceans to study, paying high international fees.”, as stated by Bradshaw and Baluja in “Why Many international students get a falling grade in academic integrity”.

While how to give penalties to international students has give the faculties a headache, more professors and stuff want to figure out why more international are involved in plagiarism and what reason drive them in this pain affairs. With the increasing number of international students from all the other continents, this problem become more and more widespread. As cited by Gillespie in “Guide to Advising International Students about Academic Integrity”, 2011 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange shows that “the number of international students in the United State increased 4.68 percent over the previous year for a total of 723,277 students”. This increasing number not only is obvious in the total amount but also appears in the growing proportion of the students involved in plagiarism and academic misconduct. As is talked above, international students come to study here, paying high international fees, thus they have to carry a lot of pressure including family expectation, future career and culture adjustment. Culture, as one of the most important factor contributing to international plagiarism, is somewhat hard to give a clear definition. Gillespie points out that “It is important to remember that plagiarism is a Western ideal.” In addition, he also gives out other important factors, “that international students have left their homes and travelled many miles to pursue their academic dreams, they often feel enormous pressure to be very successful. This pressure combined with differing cultural assumptions of plagiarism and students’ lack of knowledge about plagiarism policies can potentially lead to scholastic disaster.”

Blog 7: My Two Issues About Plagiarism

The Internet now has made the access to the digital information much easier and unsafe than before. Many students may become cheaters because of the Internet, even though they may not know that they are plagiarizing the work of others. This essay will describe some of the problems involved with using Internet daily in our life, and how it could affects the student’s behavior. Also it discuss the benefit of using it itself to fight the plagiarism in the academic integrity.

Today thousands of resources like research papers, articles, and essays can be downloaded for free from the Internet, make battling plagiarism more complicated, compared to the time before the arrival of the Internet. Search engines, such a Google, Yahoo, or MSN make the information unsafe and easy to share .For one single search, students could found many different sources, which make the detecting of plagiarism more difficult for educators. The piece by Kayla Webley at Time (with the headline “Survey: College Plagiarism Is at an All-Time High”), “a new survey from the Pew Research Center shows plagiarism in college is on the rise.” As cited by Daniel Luzer, in her articlePlagiarism on the Rise,” hypothesizes that 89% of the college presidents surveyed said that computers and the Internet have increased cheating and copying someone’s other work over the past 10 years. However, we cannot simply stop using Internet because it has many benefits other than just increasing plagiarism. First, it has made us in a small world.  Students now can communicate between them and get relationships, experiences, and learn about the others' diverse cultures. Secondly it gives you a variety of opinions and authors, instead of just one perspective. Students can write essays in their laptops and send it by emails to their professors, and save a lot of time for both. Another point is that many of the websites like Turnitin.com and search engines are being used for catching the Plagiarism in the students’ papers. And become an effective way to prevent it. David E Harrington in his article “(Moral) Hazards of Scanning for Plagiarists: Evidence from Shoplifting,” states that Turnitin helps teach students how to improve their citations and paraphrasing. And it’s better at identifying some types of plagiarism than others.

Many students when they used words or ideas from books as their own, they may know is plagiarism. But when they used them from a website, they may not consider it as plagiarism. Students may get confused while surfing the Internet. Some websites are using a lot of works without distributing the author’s name, the copyright date and contain only a few pages. Because of that many students may not consider these works as an intellectual property. Downloading music for free, sharing information between us every day in Facebook or Twitter, and accepting some violations as arbitrary in our life. Give the impression that the materials in the Internet are created by no one. Books, on the contrary, usually started by the writer’s name and the people who supported making it, those things made the citation easy and clear for students to use. But sometimes book are difficult to get through, because you have to read and find relative information page by page, which required more effort and time for copying the information down in the papers. Susan D. Blum in her book My World! Plagiarism and College Culture, states that technology like internet and new culture has made it harder for students to distinguish between originality of their own work and the others. She notes that students might feel guilty for shoplifting, but not for plagiarism or downloading music.

Different countries have different education on academic conduct. Culture differences, education background and social value would cause international students pay less attention to academic misconduct. I just know it is not right to copy other people's idea before I came to America. Teachers teach nothing about academic conduct. They just tell us we can not cheating during exam; but out of examination, they do not care about where materials come from. Even though, teachers used other school's materials in the examination when I was in high school. Using materials without citation is become a costume for some international students. Moreover, it is cost nothing for Chinese downloading content of books from internet. It is free for us to watch new movies and read new books. Teachers use internet to find exam sources, we just type some words in the search tool to find answers. "Nigeria: Copy, Paste and Plagiarize" written by  Joel Bloch, shows that information overload add difficult to protect copyright, and have bad influence on academic conduct. It is easy for people getting sources and pasting it. Hence, international students do not think copyright seriously. Some famous writer publishes book which is plagiarism from others in China. There is no institution working for checking contents of book before publishing. Full society does not focus on plagiarism issues in China. As a result, international students do not pay attention to academic conduct, they are accustomed using other people's idea. In some times, they do not realize they are doing wrong things. Otherwise, international students need learn more about academic conduct. For my example, I just know I need cite sources which not the only one requirement in the academic conduct before I took ESL course. Now, I know how to summary the sentence, right conduct in citing sources and how to quote others idea. If I did not take ESL, I could not sure I would not involve in academic misconduct. Academic conduct is not easy as citing sources.
Some people think it is unfair treat international students differently like teaching us right correct behavior in academic writing. However, because of lacking education in academic conduct, that is why we need learn. There is a fact, the number of international students involving in academic misconduct is larger than American students. And the article " The China Conundrum", written by Andrew Councill mentions the goal for students learning English is passing exam in China, not really learn what English is. Now, we learn what we should have learn in our country.
There are many ways for international students strengthening their consciousness in academic conduct. They can watch videos which talk about value of academic conduct which is able to improve their cognition of academic conduct. Like me, taking ESL courses. I think this is a better way for international students fully understanding of academic conduct. On the other hand, faculty can let international students know punishments related to plagiarism and how serious the consequence will be if they involved in academic misconduct. The article " Academic Misconduct: Can plagiarism be weeded out?" describes that disciplinary measures would prohibit academic misconduct, some students get punish because of academic misconduct, then some of them will not do it again, said by Bolton. The article also mentions ways can reduce plagiarism like faculty can educate students realize the plagiarism is not moral behavior and punishing students who are accused of plagiarism.

According to the research, there are many different reasons resulting in students willingness to take the risk to plagiarize or cheating during their exams. For example, Karan, as cited by James Bradshaw and Tamara Baluja in the article “why many international students get a failing grade in Academic integrity”, mentions that the high pressure from the parents and tuition fee is one of the reasons causing students plan on cheating. We have to say, nowadays, parents spend a lot of money on children’s education, especially for studying abroad. They want their children can get a degree then find a better job to sponsor them when they become old. (Bradshaw and Baluja, 2009) Actually, a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and energies when we face difficulties. But some students afraid of the stress, and lose control of it, then the stress rob them of joy and happiness and do them harm both physically and mentally. As the result, some students fear to get bad grade so they decide to plagiarize or cheating.  On the other hand, Internet plays an important role in plagiarism. With the advent of Internet, plagiarism has become quite easy. Students can get large number of information with the help of Internet search engines within few seconds. Some students developed a false belief that the sprit of the Internet is sharing, so the articles or ideas on the Internet can be downloaded and used for any purpose without permission and citation. They don’t realize that they have stolen other’s intellectual property and involved in plagiarism or copy infringement. In the article “Has the internet encouraged plagiarism”, the author mentions that when the deadline coming, the journalists know the editors have no time to check up whether each word of a journalist’s work is their own, so they gather information and data from the internet and combine them into a news. In fact, the similar situation also happen among campus, when students face the deadline of homework, they don’t choose to work hard or to get help from writing center and their professors, instead, they search the same topic articles on the Internet and copy them as their own work. They think there are millions of article on the Internet, it is impossible that the professor can find their articles.  Unfortunately, their wishes always burst and get an F finally.
However, when the students are committed to plagiarism, the punishments are necessary. But the same treatments for both domestic students and international are unfair. In many cases, some international students don’t plagiarize or cheat on purpose; they just don’t adapt themselves to new environment. As mentioned in the article “Cheating Across Culture”, the Western style of citing sources isn’t universal. The professor Greenblatt, as cited by Elizabeth Redden, explains that “many Asian students come from educational systems in which the norm is to repeat back a textbook or a professor verbatim (without a citation), as a sign of respect to the source of knowledge.” (P.1) So if the international students don’t be provided the specific lessons for the West style of citing, they may make some citing mistakes on their homework or exams and result in plagiarism. Thus He states that the schools and professors have the responsibilities to educate the international students through orientations or lessons or brochures in order to help them cover this problem. Moreover, the different teaching and learning styles also are barriers.  Karan as an international student from India was involved in plagiarism after he copy text from his professor’s lecture slides without permission. Actually, he didn’t realize this action could result in plagiarism, because in India, reproducing the word of teachers is encouraged and is a good way to get high grade. (Bradshaw and Baluja, 2009)

Blog#7 Two issues about Plagiarism

Why students prefer to plagiarizing online resources probably bases on two reasons. At first, compared to books, the characteristics of electric files make them easily accessible and convenient to be used in academic cheating. The resources on the internet are much more abundant than books deposited in a school and renewed every minute. In many universities, like OSU, a great amount of research papers and textbooks related to all kinds of subjects in electric form are supplied in OSU library websites for education purpose. Students can search online by entering a keyword and be allowed to download what they need without limitation of time and place, which can also be done in public websites, like pubmed.com. Moreover, plagiarizing sentences and even whole articles is very easy through simply copying and pasting. Laju Arnyeka, in his article “Nigeria: Copy, Paste and Plagiarize”, discusses the effect of the internet on plagiarism in Nigerian campuses. Ife Abidakunoluwa, an English Education student, as cited by Arnyeka in his article, admits that most students, like him, complete their assignments by copying and pasting. And these plagiarism behaviors usually are undetectable, because no one could read all materials in the internet. Another reason that students plagiarize the online resources is that they consider the information in the websites as a sharing thing, no matter what originality is. Growing up in the time of the internet, young people like to share everything online, such as in blog, in the Facebook and Twitter, and frequently are regardless of the originality, which results in copying resources without citation. The survey done by Susan Blum in her book My World! Plagiarism and College Culture, introduced by Scott Jaschik in his article “It’s Culture, Not Morality”, analyzes the student culture leading to violation of academic norms. Blum in her book states that students do not take account in the originality of online resources and regard sharing and collaboration to be acceptance. Therefore, students violate the norms both in daily life and in school, like sharing music online and plagiarism in their assignments. Generally, as the development of technology in the internet age, students are encouraged to search online for reference materials; on the other hand, the unique characteristics of online information and students’ concepts of sharing and originality result in the rising of plagiarism based on online resource in academics, which should be treated seriously.

More and more colleges have noticed this problem “internet plagiarism” than before; and they also take some actions against it, not only traditional educations on plagiarism, but also specific strategies targeting online information, like anti-plagiarism software. The most famous and popular service around the world is Turnitin, which is widely used for detection of potential plagiarism. Frankly, it does save teachers a lot of time and energy on anti-plagiarism, but completely depending on this software is insufficient. In the first place, students have many objective and subjective excuses to plagiarize, even though they are warned to be scanned by Turnitin. The article “Use of Turnitin software does not deter cheating, study finds”, written by Claire Shaw, introduces the study done by Dr Youmans at California State University about the efficacy of anti-plagiarism software. According to the study, there was no significant difference in the percentage of plagiarism between two groups in which students were warned to be scanned or not. Dr Youmans, as quoted by Shaw, concludes that “Even when combined with aggressive teaching methods, the Turnitin detection system failed to provide a sufficient deterrent”. Next, the articles in Turnitin are only part of resources on the internet, so the negative answer does not mean that there is no plagiarism happened. In addition, another system designed by the Turnitin platform is WriteCheck through which students can check whether their revised assignments are “cleansed of easily recognizable plagiarism”. David Harrington, in his article “(Moral) Hazards of Scanning for Plagiarists: Evidence from Shoplifting”, describe this anti-anti-plagiarism software which assists plagiarists against detection. Consequently, completely relying on anti-plagiarism software does not efficiently stop academic misconduct. Harrington suggests that other approaches are combined with anti-plagiarism software to avoid plagiarism, like plagiarism education. In the colleges, students are required to attend the orientation about plagiarism and even take writing courses to learn skills of paraphrasing. For instance, the OSU online plagiarism tutorial briefly assesses what kind of behaviors is defined as plagiarism and how to avoid them. The No.8 question about “internet plagiarism” explains that directly coping information from internet without paraphrasing and citing is considered as academic cheating. Clare Trayner, as cited by Brian Brady and Kunal Dutta in their article “45,000 caught cheating at Britain’s universities”, a student in geography at Royal Holloway, was accused of plagiarism because one paragraph in her essay was copied from an internet site, for example. Overall, multiple tools should be taken to stop academic misconduct based on online resources, including specific strategies and plagiarism education.

Blog#7 Plagiarism Issues

Blog#7 Plagiarism Issues
Nowadays, universities and colleges have spent major concerns dealing with an increasing plagiarism phenomenon occurred among students. Since “plagiarism” has became a heated key word of university search engine, even exceed “tuition” and “majors”, people started to reconsider the rationality of the temporary method dealing with plagiarism. However, academic world used to supervise plagiarism by enforcement of certain criterion, by which alert and punish students who violated academic integrity. With the emerge of latest technologies, website as Turnitin received its reputation by efficient supervision and simple manipulation; which means academia kneeled to technology and surrender to monster plagiarism. Is enforcement of plagiarism reasonable for both professors and students, or in other word, is it fair to students who intend to committing plagiarism and students who really want to study? In the article “Is Policing Plagiarism At A University As Counterproductive As Trying To Stop Copyright Infringement?” by Mike Masnick, the author suggests that the side effect of strangling plagiarism has overlapped its contribution to the academic world.  Mike states that the success in supervising plagiarism by Turnitin absolutely destroyed classroom morale in NYU, innocent students are not satisfied with the overall learning experience because they think professor Panagiotis Ipeirotis should have spend more energy on preparing for lecture rather than being a plagiarism detective. He also points out that the wonder drug for avoiding plagiarism is mutual promotion and peer supervision among students.
International students inclined to have different reasons for plagiarism due to various cultural and academic background. With the globalization, not only to the aspect of economics, but also to the education, there is a climbing number of international students study abroad. Because most of their destination are USA, UK, Australia and Canada, in which country English language are widely used and spread, international students should adjust and adapt to the diverse environment as soon as possible. In the article “Cheating Across Cultures” by Elizabeth Redden, it is reported that 34 first-year international business school students in Duke University were accused of collaborating on a take-home test in April, 2007, and it arouse a widely concern of motivation and reason behind the scene. As cited by Elizabeth in his article, Greenblatt points out that many Asian students come from education system in which the students show respect to the professors by verbatim copying. Timothy Dodd, as cited by Elizabeth Redden is her article, holds that language barrier has blocked the path of international students in fully understanding codes of conduct, he also explained that being “Exotic” in learning and living styles have alienated international students from mainstream social groups, from which cultivate desperation and thus, lead to cheating. Michael Elliott, director of international student and scholar services, as cited by Elizabeth Redden in her article, launched a program several years ago, in order to help international students adapt to drastically different academic environment through a brochure. Michael Elliott claimed that the brochure gave a helping hand to international students by introducing the tip as well as sanction related to academic issue. As cited in the article “Why Many International Students Get a Failing Grade in Academic Integrity” by James Bradshaw and Tamara Baluja, Karan Bellinger states that international students do not plan on cheating, but failed to keep up with intensive academic pace and receiving pressure from parents and job seeking lead to an unexpected results.

Blog # 6 My progress

To  written  English as a second  language it difficult to explain everything as you want.  because my native language is completely different than English, Especially the first time to write correct grammar to tell the truth  it was very hard, in my first writing I did a lot of mistakes but I learn from the past and I got a little better now.  I still need more practice, and I am working on it.
when it comes with summarize I'm  learning something new I never new before, so it is tricky to figure out the main idea, and to put the article together step by step to be where supposed to be.
about my digital story it will be interesting, because it is my real life story how I was and how I am now.  I did tried  very hard when I did wrote the story because the word we use home when you translate to English it wasn't easy I had to try hard to put the right word to explain that what I want to say.   And  I'm still working with the picture that it much or explain the word what I did wrote on the story.

blog 6 : A Review of My ESL Writing

When I first came to the United States, I did not speak English. The only thing that helped me to understand and communicate with people was French, because there are some similarities between English and French, although French pronunciation is different than English. The French alphabet contains the same 26 letters as the English alphabet, and the colon in French may introduce direct speech, citation, summary, or explanation; however, quotation marks don’t exist in French; the guillemets « » are used. My first academic writing class in the US is ESL 106, which is helping me improve my ability to summarize texts, articles, video, and pictures. I have always had a problem with separating my own ideas from the writer’s thoughts. I think since I took this class I have become more aware of the expectations for writing effectively in English. I learned from Professor Benson about verbs and their use for summarizing a text and how it’s important to choose the right verb, informative or descriptive.  While descriptive verbs are used to give the main idea of a topic, informative verbs help give details. After summarizing, there is a response part, which includes our ideas, opinion and whether we agree with the writer’s opinion or not.

Plagiarism is an important issue at OSU. This is the first time that I have written about this topic of avoiding plagiarism. Plagiarism has become more important to me than just citing a reference. I still have difficulty paraphrasing an idea or expression in a specific part of the text because sometimes I add information from another part to it.  Writing a paper in English is not easy for me because I don’t have experience in the language’s grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Fortunately, there are many great opportunities in this class that help us practice our skills in writing. Grammar exercises, tests, quizzes and editing more than two times, will help us get into the habit of writing.

This spring I had the chance to write a story about my grandfather. In the beginning I was not sure what exactly a digital story is. What do the readers want me to show them in my story? And where am I in it? After I saw some videos of digital stories from the previous class, I got a better image of mine and how it should be prepared. Professor Benson gave me some comments about my first essay, like shortening the historical information and explaining how I can relate my grandfather’s story to me. My story started with the conflict of war, followed by the discussion and arguing. My story is filled with emotions, with a mixture of happiness and sadness. The key in my digital story is that anybody could be my grandfather, even for a short time, and that enemies can exist not only in the war itself, but also in the people.  I used to hear that the perfect story doesn’t exist. In my opinion, the closest you can come to perfect is by transferring your feelings, words, voice, images, and music as a piece of art that will hold the viewers’ interest.

Blog #6 My progress in writing

Frankly, I am not good at writing papers at all both in Chinese and in English. During in the high school, I was afraid to finish the writing assignments in Chinese. In my undergraduate period, there were no classes related to writing in English, but my score in GRE writing was 4.0 and in IBT it was 24 after I practiced a lot in writing issues. While I am good at grammar, hard-working is still needed in organizing structure of an article and proper application of words.
Because I have not written an issue in 1-hour for more than two years, I got a very bad score in English replacement test. It took me a lot of time to think about my idea about the issue; moreover, the sentences I wrote were with a lot of mistakes in grammar and spelling. Therefore, I was glad to take ESL 506 class, in which I could learn skills about writing in English and practice writing frequently. The most useful skill I learnt in 506 is how to use the reporting verbs accurately which I have never learnt before. Right now I know that which reporting verbs are informative or descriptive and how to properly choose them. In the midterm, I still made some mistakes in grammar, but I had gotten great progresses in writing, like paraphrasing and sentence pattern. As English is a subject of application, the best way to improve it is practicing again and again; moreover, writing a good argument essay in limited time is my goal after studying this course.
To produce a digital story of my own is another interesting experience in this course. I just became a mother this year and I always wanted to write something about this unique experience. I did not satisfy my first DST script which were too long and without an emphasis, so I rewrote it to stress my experiences of gestational diabetes, including different cultural opinions related to it. The new script has reached my expectation. How do you think?

Blog #6. My progress as a writer

I have wide spectrum of words in my first language writings. I can use various words, especially, high academic words. Also, I can write complicated sentences without grammar errors. When it comes to writing skills in a second language, I have difficulty in selecting appropriate words and phrases. It is difficult for me to catch the subtle differences among words.
However, the strong point of my writing skill in a second language is shortening the relative clause. Also, I improved the summarizing skills in EDUTL 106 course. I become get used to using reporting verbs. I learned what reporting verb is suitable for certain sentences. I learned important criteria to use reporting verbs: Noun phrase or Clause following specific reporting verbs. I didn’t know specific citation rules. With the citation tutorial and citation rules learned in class, I understand how to cite properly. Writing paraphrasing sentences for the summary assignments help me to improve the paraphrasing skills. I think the best way to improve my grammar and editing is writing many sentences.
The first draft of my digital story has some grammar mistakes. There are some unnecessary words and sentences. Also, the sentences and paragraphs are not related well each other. So, in the second draft, I changed most part of the information in paragraphs to make all paragraphs related well. I think the second draft of my digital story is organized well. I use some specific my experience during my trip. I give some cultural examples when I describe the cultural assimilation in Hong Kong. I think my story tell what I learned from the travel very well. I try to show what I feel in the certain experiences in my travel.

Honestly, my writing skill is poor even in my native language. Ever since I was a high school student, I have denied studying any literature or writing. The first reason was, it wasn’t just interesting and I prefer science to Korean or literature. Thus, I think this inclination for refusing literature and studying only science has influenced on my second language writing. How can I argue or write something that I can’t even discuss in my language. I guess my spoken English is better than written English.

In terms of summarizing, I didn’t have any difficulties except that I have to spend time on reading some articles that were struggling since I am working a lot of things this quarter. I don’t think I put my best on this course. I didn’t even do proof-reading. What I need to improve now is trying to make an effort instead of thinking of grammar. Of course it doesn’t mean that I don’t make grammatical mistakes. The best ways for me to improve my grammar and editing is following. First, spare time for writing. Second, proof read my work. Last try to remember what I know.

I am not satisfied with my digital story script now. I could have revised this but I couldn’t . But I tried to make flow while I was writing this and since my drastic experience, I was able to write down whole story in few minutes. I used a change of mood for my story; at the beginning of my digital story, I wrote background, how I started studying, what made me in a trouble and so on. Then I described things what I did in order to overcome this difficulty. Somebody in our class recommended me to write more detail about my overcoming story, but I just decided to skip it because that doesn’t mean special to me. What I mean is that everyone puts effort on their things that important to them. My endeavor is not special. The result is special to me. Thus I think the script what I have so far is enough.

my progress as a writer

Trough the two months learning, I have new understanding on English writing. In China, I need use beautiful words or big words to beautify my works, I should use many complex sentences to improve work's level. Hence, when I wrote works, I just focus on words and structure of works. In contrast, in English writing, I would better provide examples to support my idea. I should show my idea in the real situations. Also, the structure is also important in English writing. What is more, I can use resources from other people without permission in China, even I knew we need respect other people's right. Now, I am not allowed to use people's work without citation. But I do not realize American University take plagiarism seriously, even I can not hand in same paper to different courses. Furthermore, my article should have logical or clearly consecution. In China, teachers care more about how big words you used and how high level sentences you used. consecution is less important for article. During these two months, I know how to cite sources when I use other people ideas, and I learn what is right formal to quote people's words. If I express my idea, I should find facts to support my idea. In addition, I learn how to summary article and how to use reporting words to illustrate author’s idea. It is useful for us to write academic works.
For my part, the grammer is most diffcult for me, I am bad at using suited preposition in a sentence, and I not good at writing composite or compound sentence. When I write composite sentences, I also confused should I use pronoun. I should read books about grammar. And coca search is good for me to learn verb structure. Except reading grammar books, I should practice more and read more works from other people. Practicing would help me to strength our skill in wrting, as well as I can learn correct structure and find our shortage in the writing through reading other people’s works.
At began writing my digital story, I just want to show people live in small town have different life compared to people who live in city. I think people live far away from city need help. Then, I found much damage on the environment from mordernization. I become confuesd which we should choose economy and environment. Finally, my digital story not only focuses on the people’s life condition, but also conflict between environment and modernization. I am ok with my story, I express what I thought, but my digital story lacks beautiful words and some high level sentences which would beautify my story. Moreover, I made much mistakes in the grammer which I need to improve. On the other hand, I use some examples about their life conditions, culture examples about what strong power of religion affect them and I also point out conflict between environment and economy. I give an example of swamp becoming smaller because of pollution. As I said at the middle of this paragraph, I still have some shortages on my digital story, I need practice more in the future.

In Korean, I can convey my ideas easily and faster than in Englias as a second language. I think because I know Korean words more than English words. Even I think of my ideas fast in Korean, I feel stuck in my head when I try to translate Korean words into English. Depending on my grammar skills and the knowledge of the way of American style expression I need to change my meanings into a simple grammar sentences. Therefore, this process everytime when I write in English I need more time to think and the sentences are going to be simpler than when I write in Korean. However, I try to catch and express the main ideas even I convey the simple grammar sentences.

I think I know how to cite the sources, paraphrasing and using reporting verbs, but I not perfectly. I still confuse when I can use quotation mark or just commas. I want to paraphrase sentences by using other words or by making simple sentences including main ideas, but it is difficult to do I think it's because of my lackness of memorized words. I also know the reporting verbs but I think I'm having trouble with which verb is more fit into a sentence. I think my grammar or editing ability is normal because I believe that editing ability of other's writings is depending on how much I can make correct sentences. The preposition coming with a verb is still difficult for me. Practicing shortening the relative clause help me to apply in my sentences. I think I should look up a grammar book and try to solve many examples or read other's essays so that I can improve my grammar and editing. I would check my grammar and sentences making a sense by searching grammars.

I'm satisfied with my digital story script. I used a introduction of a country because people would not know much about that country. I think I need to make some highlights or edit some parts of my digital story so that people can be attracted more into.

As we know, Chinese and English are totally different languages whether in vocabulary or grammar. Therefore, English writing skill becomes a significant challenge for Chinese students who are studying abroad.  Taking myself as an example, in China, I do well in my writing class, but when I begin to study in America, my articles often can’t meet the professor’s requirements. Sometimes, I present a very good idea in my paper but there are much grammar mistakes; sometimes, I avoid all grammar mistakes but ignore the accuracy of vocabulary; thus I always get an unsatisfied grade on my paper.   After taking the English class, I find my major barrier in English writing is vocabulary; there is no gainsaying that vocabulary is the basic of writing, so I try hard to enlarge my vocabulary. In my opinion, do more reading is a good way of improving vocabulary, I always high light the new words in the articles, then remember them and try to use them in my paper.
In English 106, we focus on summarizing skills and how to avoid plagiarism. Through writing summary, I have learned various reporting verbs and can use them in a correct way now. In addition, my grammar and editing ability improve quickly through lots of paper work. However, there are still some difficulties in English writing, for example, I always use wrong punctuation between two sentences. In order to cover this problem, I think knowing the function of each punctuation is important, only when you know their functions, you can use them on a correct way.
To be honest, I never write a digital story script before, so it is a challenge for me (more than 3 draft has improved this). At the beginning, I wanted to write a story about Steve Jobs, but I found it is hard to relate his life and experiences to myself, so I decided to write a story about the differences between my previous school and OSU. As a transfer student, I realize that most students only study in a big university like OSU, they don’t know the life in small college, so I can provide some examples of differences in studying and daily life to attract them. Now, I have finished my story script and recording, and also collected enough pictures. I believe I can produce a good movie to tell my own story.
