Blog#8 DST Summary and Critiques

The video, ‘Outside the Glass’, by Golden Jackson mainly explains the experience about service teaching experience in Honduras. She starts her digital story with describing the reason she why decided to go to the orphanage in Honduras for teaching. At first, she didn’t want to go out of familiar place. However, she decided to challenge herself moving outside of her comfort life with the service opportunity. The video examines the major activities that she took part in. Although she participated in the service program as a teacher, she also learned from the students and the community in Honduras. The video points out what she learned hospitality, friendless, abilities and value of community from the student and the community. Moreover, she stresses the integrated learning concept, applying service learning to real world problem resolution. She claims that the integrated learning would impact on personal and social development. She also emphasizes how much valuable her experience ‘behind the glass’.
I think that the digital story well convey the main point of the story to the audience. She mainly talks about her service teaching program experience in Honduras. It shows the purpose of telling the story by emphasizing what she learned during the service. Her story was interesting, as it started with the reason why she participated in the service and finished with her feeling of her unique experience. Especially, she mentioned that she don’t want to go outside of her comfortable zone. For me, the way of expressing her frank emotion is surprising and interesting. Furthermore, she gives some accent for stressing some important word. It helps me to concentrate her main view point and understand her story. However, I think her images are not helpful to understanding digital story. Since some of images are just picture of group and scenery of Honduras, it is not related with main point of her story.
